We are delighted to welcome Matthias Rothe, an internationally renowned scholar in the fields of theatre and literary studies, to our center. In his lecture, based on his recently published book Tropen des Kollektiven (“Tropes of the Collective”, Nov. 2024), Rothe critically examines the emancipatory aspirations of epic theatre, with a particular focus on gender relations and the concept of collectivity. Rather than focusing on programmatic claims or manifestos, Rothe turns his attention to the concrete artistic (collaborative) work and asks whether and how a productive (gender-political) critique of the theatre avant-garde can be formulated from this perspective.
Matthias Rothe is Professor of German Studies and Philosophy at the University of Minnesota.
